Amateur 22 years old Cahil Defeats World No 1 Selby

Three-time World and two-time UK Champion Shelby became the victim of one of the biggest shocks in Betway UK Championship history after he lost 6-3 to amateur James Cahill in the first round. 22-years-old James Cahil outplayed the tournament one of the favourites for the title. After this defeat Champion Selby crashed out of the tournament and didn't even make it to the TV stages in New York.

James Cahil started brilliantly as he won the first four frames with a top break of 70. Selby had a chance to pull back the game in frame six but missed a short-range final pink to a centre pocket. Cahil was dropped off the pro tour in 2017 but he showcased his skills after he was handed a place in the 128-man field as one of the leading ‘top-ups’ from the Q School ranking list.

Cahil started brilliantly as he won the first four frames with a top break of 70. Selby had a chance to pull back the game in frame six but missed a short-range final pink to a centre pocket. The seventh frame went Selby’s way but in the ninth frame, Cahill converted a brilliant pot to seal a victory.

James Cahil was in the news almost four years ago for the same kind of a setback when he defeated Ding Junhui in the same tournament. Mark Selby can lose his number one title for the first time since 2015 if Mark Williams wins the title in New York.
