BURNS’ NIGHT…TRUMP SUFFERS SHOCK DEFEAT

World number one Judd Trump was beaten 5-3 by Ian Burns, ranked 82 places lower, in the first qualifying round of the BetVictor European Masters.

World Champion Trump was well below his best in Barnsley, making just two breaks over 40. He led 3-2 but then lost the last three frames as Preston’s Burns booked a match with Zhao Xintong.

The second round of the world ranking event takes place on Thursday with the 32 winners going through to the final stages in Dornbirn, Austria in January.

Mark Selby edged out Ken Doherty 5-4, winning a 43-minute decider 65-31. John Higgins saw off Lei Peifan 5-2 while UK Champion Ding Junhui compiled runs of 83, 74, 74 and 102 in a 5-1 defeat of Alexander Ursenbacher.

Jimmy White came from 3-1 down to beat Hammad Miah 5-4 while Mark Allen saw off Mark King 5-2 and Shaun Murphy scored a 5-2 win over Ashley Carty.

Austrian wild card Florian Nuessle led Jak Jones 4-3, but Jones made a 126 in frame eight then won the decider by clearing from brown to pink.
