The Crucible Theatre, home of the Betfred World Snooker  Championship, has been named as one of England’s top ten sporting venues in a list compiled by Historic England.

Paralympian Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson selected the list from a group of initial public nominations. The top ten form part of Historic England’s ‘A History of England in 100 Places’ campaign.

The Crucible was named alongside the likes of Twickenham Stadium, Lords Cricket Ground and the All England Club in Wimbledon.

The Sheffield venue has been home to the World Championship since 1977 and celebrated the 40th anniversary of hosting the event last May.

Baroness Grey-Thompson said: “Picking a top ten list was really challenging, but an enjoyable experience as you have to take into account both the venue and the sporting event.

“I tried to pick a combination of those with historical value, plus community venues that make a real difference to people’s enjoyment of taking part in sport.”
