Marco Fu has announced that he will take some time away from professional snooker after undergoing eye surgery.

The world number nine has been diagnosed with retinal degeneration and was forced to undertake laser eye treatment to correct the problem.

The 2016 Scottish Open champion enjoyed one of his best ever seasons in 2016/17, reaching the Players Championship final on top of his win in Glasgow. Fu also made the last eight of the World Championship at the Crucible.

However, the three-time ranking event winner has struggled to capture his best form this term, having not gone beyond the last 16 stage in ranking competition.

The Hong Kong potter admits he has been having problems with his left eye since the start of the season and that he now faces an extended period out of action while he recovers.

Fu said on Facebook: “I was told by the doctor that I’m suffering from retinal degeneration, laser surgery’s been done so no worries! The doctor recommends a rest to avoid retinal detachment. Therefore I will not take part in any competition for the coming months.”
