John Higgins v Kyren Wilson: World Snooker Championship preview
Kyren Wilson aims to continue his fine form by reaching the Semi-Finals of the World Championship for the first time, but faces a tough Quarter-Final show-down contest with four-time champion John Higgins at The Crucible.
World number 14 Wilson has produced some solid snooker on the way to reaching his second consecutive quarter-final of snooker’s blue-riband event in Sheffield.
First, he overcame Leeds qualifier David Grace 10-6 in the opening round, before eventually seeing off a stubborn Stuart Bingham 13-10 in the second to reach the Last Eight of a ranking event for the fourth time this season.
Despite racing into a 5-0 lead, Wilson was pegged back to 5-4 and 10-9 by the 2015 champion, but demonstrated his trademark temperament to maintain his composure and prevail.
Should he build such an advantage in the quarters, the Warrior cannot afford to take his foot off the gas against Higgins, who has proven time and time again that he will not give up until the final ball is potted.
The four-time World champion has looked very solid so far in his bid for a fifth Crucible crown, which would move him level with Ronnie O’Sullivan.
After beating Martin Gould 10-6 in round one, he appeared to be in trouble at 5-2 down against Mark Allen in the Last 16.
However, the inspired Scotsman would win 11 of the next 15 frames – producing two trademark counter clearances along the way – to seal his place in the quarter-finals for the 13th time in his illustrious career.
It promises to be a magnificent encounter over the best of 25 frames, with the winner playing either Barry Hawkins or Stephen Maguire in the semi-finals of the 2017 World Championship.
Play at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield gets underway at 10am BST with the opening eight frames on Tuesday. The second session will commence at 7pm, before playing to a conclusion at 10am on Wednesday.
