Kyren Wilson beat Ding Junhui 8-4 in the final to win the SangSom Six Red World Championship in Bangkok.

World number eight Wilson dominated the final in the Thai capital to win the title for the first time and take the top prize of 3.5 million Baht (around £82,000).

That made it back to back titles for Kettering’s 26-year-old Wilson as he also won the Paul Hunter Classic in Germany two weeks ago.

China’s Ding missed out on his second Six Red title having won the event in 2016. Victory would also have earned him a  place at the Champion of Champions in November.

Wilson trailed 2-1 early in the final but then surged 6-2 ahead with top breaks of 55 and 67. Ding recovered to 6-4 before Wilson won the last two frames.

“Ding is always hard to beat and he has won this tournament before,” said Wilson, who now heads to the Shanghai Masters aiming to become the first player to win three tournaments in a row since John Higgins in 2001. “You have to play well to beat Ding and punish his mistakes. It’s nice to win a title here and beat him in the final. I have really enjoyed the week and I’ll definitely be back to defend the title next year.

“Given the standard these days it’s very difficult to win two events in a row. Winning has become a habit. On to Shanghai where I have fond memories.”
