Luca Brecel Makes Maximum 147
The Belgian’s perfect knock came in the third frame of his 3-0 round-robin victory over John Higgins at the Ricoh Arena in Group 7 of the tournament that’s played behind closed doors.
The maximum effort included a wonderful pot on the yellow and a gutsy final black to the middle pocket after he had put the feat in jeopardy by running out of position on the pink.
Brecel, who went on to lose his next two matches in the group stage to lie last after the opening day in Coventry, has endured an up and down season so far.
The 23 year-old experienced the ecstasy of a maiden ranking event success last summer when he lifted the China Championship trophy but in recent months he has fallen out of form due, in large part, to issues with finding a suitable cue to play with.
This 147 marks the 136th in the history of professional snooker and the fifth to be made during this campaign.
Meanwhile, Judd Trump currently tops Group 7, which stands as the last opportunity for players to qualify for the Winners’ Group that takes place later this week.
Trump is a three-time winner of the Championship League and has only failed to reach the Winners’ Group three times since it was first staged in 2008.
The Englishman compiled a brace of centuries in winning all three of his ties and is in pole position to qualify for the semi-finals of Group 7 on Tuesday.
Dominic Dale, Jimmy Robertson, Ricky Walden, Robert Milkins, and Higgins are the others fighting it out for the remaining spot.
