Mark Selby and Ding Junhui both made it through the first qualifying round of the D88 German Masters on Tuesday.
World Champion Selby beat Sam Baird 5-0 in Barnsley with top breaks of 94 and 80. In the second round he will face Jamie Jones, who came from 4-3 down to beat Zhang Anda 5-4, making breaks of 61 and 70 in the last two frames. All second-round winners go through to the final stages in Berlin, which run from January 31 to February 4.
Ding had to come from behind three times before edging out Gerard Greene 5-4. China’s Ding trailed 1-0, 3-2 and 4-3 but eventually won the decider with a break of 60.
Anthony Hamilton won his first ranking crown in the German capital last season and he began the defence of his title by coming from 3-2 down to beat Chen Zhe 5-3.
Matthew Selt beat Northern Ireland Open finalist Yan Bingtao 5-3 with a top run of 62. That result ends Yan’s chances of beating Ronnie O’Sullivan’s record as the youngest ever ranking event winner.
Mark Williams top scored with 90 in a 5-1 win over Oliver Lines while Gary Wilson scored a surprise 5-1 win over in-form Stephen Maguire.
Jimmy Robertson produced the heaviest scoring of the day as he fired runs of 63, 132, 131 and 89 in a 5-3 win over Rhys Clark.
